Sync Results

This guide is about how to configure sync between mobile and desktop app.

Before we begin

WriteTex assumes that the network (Wi-Fi) you are connected to is safe and trusted. Do not use public Wi-Fi networks for syncing.

Checklist

  • Make sure you have installed the WriteTex app on both mobile and desktop.
  • Connect to the same Wi-Fi network on both mobile and desktop.
  • Your network does not have any firewalls or security measures that block between device communication.

This may occor if you are using a company or school network, check with your IT department.

Obtaining desktop IP address

  • Open the WriteTex app on your desktop.
  • Tap on the settings icon in the top-right corner.
  • Scroll down to the "Sync" section.
  • You will see the desktop IP address displayed there.
  • Note down your desktop IP address, for example 192.168.1.10.

If no IP address is displayed, try restarting the WriteTex app on the desktop and checking your network settings.

Configuring mobile app

  • Open the WriteTex app on your mobile device.
  • Tap on the settings icon in the top-right corner.
  • Scroll down to the "Sync" section.
  • Enter the desktop IP address you noted down earlier.
  • Try syncing by clicking the AI button in the bottom-right corner of your canvas.

For iOS users, your first sync will fail beacause the app will need to ask for permissions to access your network. Accept the permission prompt.

Debugging Sync

Windows

Check your firewall settings on Windows.

  • Make sure that the WriteTex app is allowed to communicate over the network.
  • Check if any firewalls or security software are blocking the connection. Refer to Windows

Network

If you are the IT manager of your network, check if any firewalls or security software are blocking the connection between devices. Look for settings such as AP Isolation or Network Segmentation.

If you are not the IT manager, try setting up a hotspot on your desktop and connect your mobile device to it. Using a hotspot can be very different, your computer's IP address could start with 172.16. on most devices.

IP address change

If your desktop IP address changes, you will need to update it in the WriteTex app on your mobile device. Here are some occurrences where you may need to update the IP address:

  • After restarting your desktop.
  • After disconnecting and reconnecting to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • After changing your network settings.
  • After a certain period of time (one day).
  • Switching to a different Wi-Fi network entirly.

Advanced

This part is for advanced users who know what they are doing.

Check connectivity

On desktop obtain your ip address from task manager or through ipconfig (Wdinows) or ifconfig (Mac), for example 192.168.1.10

On mobile go to Settings->Wi-Fi->Tap on your network->Advanced->IP address, for example 192.168.1.11 s ping your mobile device with desktop terminal. If you get a response, then the connection is working.

sh
ping 192.168.1.11

Expected response:

Reply from 192.168.1.11: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

Failure response:

Request timed out.

Static IP

If you are not using school or company network, you can try forcing a static ipv4 address in your system setting, this will stop the IP changing from times.

Notice: Using a static IP in school or company network is usually not allowed and can lead to connection issues.

On Windows, go to Settings->Network & Internet->Wi-Fi->Tap on your network. Obtain your current IPv4 settings including IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server. Go to IP assignment -> Edit Network IP settings -> Manual -> toggle on IPv4, fill in the settings you obtained earlier.

On Mac, go to System Preferences->Wi-Fi->Tap on details of your connect network->TCP/IP. Obtain your current IPv4 settings including IP address, subnet mask, router, DNS server. Change Configure IPv4 to Manually. Fill in the settings you obtained earlier.
